Curiosity led me to try and learn more about Kassian Cephas.
It doesn’t seem all the details about his life and work are as clear as I mentioned in my last post.
There is some debate as whether he was born of mixed blood – Javanese and Dutch – or whether he was a pure blooded Javanese. Apparently, he identified himself as pure Javanese.
Many think he was trained by Isidore Van Kinsbergen, but this is also suspect.
Regardless, my interest in his life and work continues to increase. His pictures provide a wonderful glimpse into the court of life of the Yogyanese nobility during the late 19th and early 20th century.
And his life and work provide an interesting look into life in Java on the brink of modernity under Dutch authority.
