Underwood and Underwood

In addition to the books, catalogs, and photographic prints I collected while traveling through Indonesia recently, I’ve also begun collecting prints off of ebay.

This is recent acquisition, a photograph of a volcanic eruption in Java photographed by Underwood and Underwood.

Founded by brothers Elmer and Bert Elias Underwood, Underwood and Underwood was a photographic studio and publishing house active between 1881-1940’s.  They first built their reputation by producing stereoscopic images.  By 1910, Underwood and Underwood entered news photography, and eventually became well known for the early success with aerial photographs.

This image was made in 1927, and documents a volcanic eruption in Java.
